News From The Track
Troubles North Of The Border

BGB Motorsports has been keeping busy.  Along with their two-car Porsche team, they have recently added a Scion tC to the stable.  BGB has become a part of Scion racing history, as they campaigned the Scion at the Mid Ohio round of Koni Challenge ST competition (and led part of the race), the first time a car of that make has run a professional road race.

BGB is bringing the Scion with them to Watkins Glen this weekend to run alongside their two Porsche 997 GS cars.  The Performance Drink/Weeden Consulants sponsored #83 car, with driver’s Jon Miller and Craig Stanton is looking to rebound from a tough outing at Mosport.

“We had our hopes pretty high for Mosport.  I’m still getting acclimated to the Porsche platform, and the more comfortable I get, the more I learn what this car likes and the faster I go.  Unfortunately at Mosport, we used up our one “bad race” pretty early in the season.  Whenever the GS and ST cars run together, things can get interesting, especially at a track like Mosport, where the corners are long and fast.  Many of the well driven ST cars are faster through the middle of the corner than the GS cars because they weigh so little in comparison, so passing becomes an experiment in timing, cooperation and creativity.

On about the 10th lap, as we were working our way through the first bit of ST traffic I had contact with one of the Acuras as i was passing in turn 3 and it cut down the left rear tire.  I did what I could to get back to the pits as quicly as possible, but we ended up going a lap down.  Luckily it was early in the race, and we were able to claw our lap back with a strategy change under the next caution.  Craig got in the car at the halfway mark and everything was coming back to us.  The car was handling well and we were on our way back into the top 10, when Craig showed up in pit lane again, unscheduled; Something in the shift linkage had broken."

The BGB crew diagnosed the problem and sprang into action.  While we were no longer in contention for a top finish, we were thinking about the championship and points are points.  At the checker, the #83 was scored in 22nd position.  With this bad luck and the continued strong performance of the #09 car, the #83 car fell out of the points lead for the first time this season.  The BGB crew's next chance for redemption will come at Watkins Glen on the July 4th weekend.  Expect them to be back at the front and on a charge for the championship.
